Welcome to New College Durham

Joining Us - Planning your first day

What you need to know

Once all of your pre-employment recruitment checks are complete, your manager will contact you to agree a start date. They'll take any prior commitments that you have into consideration when suggesting a start date, so make sure your manager knows if you're still working your notice period at your previous job. (standard loan) but some are only available for one week at a time. There are also books marked Reference Only and these can only be used in the Library. The date when the books are due to be returned to the Library is stamped inside on the date label. It is your responsibility to return or renew your loans on or before that date. You are responsible for any items you borrow from the Library, including loss, damage and returning them on time.

Most colleagues' working day begins at 8.30am. Some people work to a set shift pattern (such as Maintenance Officers and Customer Support Advisors), if this applies to you your manager will let you know what shift you'll be starting on with plenty of notice. Even on your first day it's important to show up for work promptly.

Yes, the areas surrounding the College can get very busy at peak times and you should factor this into your plans. It might be a good idea to allow extra travelling time on your first day to compensate for traffic, or to do a practice run during peak time a few days before you're due to start work.

Yes, the College has a large car park on site with designated areas for staff. When you arrive, drive towards the college building and through the barriers that are situated on the left hand side of the building. The spaces after this point are reserved for staff and you can park in any space that isn't signposted with restrictions.

Yes, ramps and lifts are located within all of the College buildings. Specific requirements for equipment or adjustments will be picked up from the Health Questionnaire that you completed as part of your pre-employment checks, but if you have any concerns or would like to discuss a requirement, please do not hesitate to contact Human Resources by emailing human.resources@newdur.ac.uk

Please report to the reception in the main building. Here, a member of the Customer Support team will notify your manager that you have arrived so that they can come to meet you and take you to your department.

You may not have met your manager since you attended your interview, and so your first day is a good opportunity to reacquaint yourselves. Your manager will take you on a tour of your department and introduce you to your colleagues, ensuring you are familiar with those that you'll be working closely with. Our Training and Development Manager will contact you to confirm an induction date and time. Due to the response to Covid19 this will be done virtually using Microsoft Teams.

Most colleagues working a standard pattern take an hour for their lunch break. Any variances will have been agreed between you and your manager before your first day. We're lucky to have a range of excellent facilities onsite. Coffee and snacks can be purchased from Starbucks in the sport building or Costa in the main building. We have two restaurants and a fully stocked shop in the main building, and numerous vending machines located within all of the college buildings. All of the catering facilities are cash only, but you can withdraw money from the cash machine in the main building.

Uniforms are mandatory in some departments; if you are required to wear a uniform to work your manager will have already communicated this to you. All other colleagues should wear smart business attire.

If you have been asked to provide a specific item such as a DBS certificate or a piece of ID, please ensure you remember to bring it with you on your first day. All stationery is provided by the College so there's no need to bring a note pad or pen.
